Enter CBC's creative writing challenge for students!

Open to full-time students from grades 7 to 12 across Canada, The First Page student writing challenge asks students to imagine what the great Canadian novel of the year 2167 will sound like. Write the first page of a novel (in any genre) set 150 years in the future, with the main character facing an issue that is topical today. (Your first page should be 300 to 400 words long, not including the title of the novel.) The entries will be judged in two categories: grades 7 to 9 and grades 10 to 12.

The 2018 contest deadline has not yet been announced, but in the meantime, you can read the winning entries for 2017:

Read tips for writing the first page of a novel from the contest's judge, YA author Erin Bow. You can also watch five Canadian authors read the first pages of their novels and talk about the process of writing the beginning of their novel.
